# Plugins

#### Plugins & Mixins

**What are Plugins?**

Third-party software integrated into MSF via API. They auto-document results into the database and add new commands to msfconsole — no more switching between tools manually.

***

**Using a Plugin**

Plugins live at `/usr/share/metasploit-framework/plugins/`

```bash
ls /usr/share/metasploit-framework/plugins   # see available plugins
```

```bash
msf6 > load nessus        # load plugin
msf6 > nessus_help        # see its commands
```

Successful load shows a greeting message. Failed load means the `.rb` file isn't in the plugins directory.

***

**Installing New Plugins**

Just copy the `.rb` file into the plugins folder:

```bash
git clone https://github.com/darkoperator/Metasploit-Plugins
sudo cp ./Metasploit-Plugins/pentest.rb /usr/share/metasploit-framework/plugins/
```

Then load it in msfconsole:

```bash
msf6 > load pentest
msf6 > help              # new commands automatically appear
```

> Parrot OS auto-installs popular plugins on distro updates. Custom ones need manual copying.

***

**Notable Pre-installed Plugins**

| Plugin           | Use                       |
| ---------------- | ------------------------- |
| nMap             | Scanning                  |
| Nessus / NexPose | Vuln scanning integration |
| Mimikatz (v1)    | Credential harvesting     |
| Incognito        | Token impersonation       |
| Stdapi / Priv    | Meterpreter extensions    |

**Mixins (Brief)**

MSF is written in Ruby. Mixins are Ruby modules included into classes to add optional functionality — not inheritance, but **inclusion**.

ruby

```ruby
include ModuleName
```

Relevant when you start writing our own MSF modules.

***

**Key takeaway:** Plugins extend MSF's functionality with external tools. Install → copy `.rb` → `load` → use new commands. Everything auto-logs to DB.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://capcap-1.gitbook.io/capcap/readme/ctf-modules/vulnerability-assessment/msf/plugins.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
